Franz Schubert wrote countless Lieder inspired by nocturnal imagery, often portraying the night as a quasi-magical time conducive to profound emotional catharsis. In contrast, the two Spanish composers, Enrique Granados and Manuel de Falla highlight the heightened passion and eroticism that can unfold during the midnight hours, drawing on the rich tapestry of their homeland’s folk music. Claude Debussy’s Mélodies paint exquisite impressions of dusk and dawn, from a wolf’s mournful howl to the somber tolling of bells.

„Julia Spies and Jesse Flowers are the ideal storytelling duo, combining intimacy and passion with an uncanny sense for creating a specific atmosphere.“
Julia Spies gives each song its own individual soundworld, inspired by the lyrics. Another boon for this production: the guitarist Jesse Flowers. Like Spies, he is a wonderful artist with a feeling for colours, tonal shades and dynamic nuances.
Flowers plays these miniatures with a sensitivity to varied timbres, playing techniques and articulation. All of this is combined into a charming whole, which opens up new atmospheric worlds... The young Julia Spies provides all these gems her pure, bright, clear-as-a-bell voice. Her interpretation is immensely subtle and emotionally touching. She also sings with exemplary diction and wonderful phrasing.
